I’m proud to offer my 3 favorite lines of bass amplification for sale here at D. Lakin Basses. I’ve been testing & using bass amps for over 40 years. It’s a great time to be a bassist as top sounding and lightweight equipment is available at very reasonable prices! I’ve known the namesakes for both lines of amps I carry, James Demeter and Nick Epifani for over 25 years. Both men are passionate and very talented at what they do. Trickfish is new to me this year and so far I’m absolutely impressed by the way they sound. Mix and match to create your ultimate bass amp solution! For example, my test rig is a Demeter 800 watt head going through an Epifani 410 DIST cabinet.

Trickfish Amplification was birthed out of the passion and imagination of founder Richard Ruse in 2014. The company is dedicated to delivering a collection of killer products that will serve as valuable tools for discerning bassists as they seek inspiration for their artistic vision. We share a common vision of intelligent design, precision, delectable tone and rugged durability in everything we build. I’m proud to off this great gear.

Demeter equipment is and has been the choice of professionals for over 40 years. James worked with Leland Sklar to develop the first iconic Demeter preamp. When Tony Garnier (Bob Dylan) put together his custom Meyer Sound Labs stage rig, it was a Demeter preamp they selected to drive the front end. It literally doesn’t get any better than this.

Nick is a true perfectionist. His amps and cabinets can be found on amazing stages from Ron Carter to Anthony Jackson, Epifani’s just work well with electric and acoustic bass rigs. As an active Deadhead it’s great seeing and hearing Oteil Brubridge rock the stadiums with his Epifani rig.

Demeter HBP1-800D

The HBP-1-800D H Series Tube Bass Pre/Power amplifier by James Demeter integrates an 800 Watt Class D amplifier, driven by Jensen Transformers, into the HBP-1 Preamplifier circuit. This unit uses the same all tube front end found in his classic VTBP-201 Bass pre-amplifier and combines it with the revolutionary H Series circuitry found in his professional audio H Series line. Utilizing the best of both the tube and solid state world, the HBP-1-800D features high voltage (250V) tube front end (providing all of the preamplifier gain and passive tone controls), a two band solid state fully parametric equalizer that is tuned for bass, a fully adjustable active effects loop with controls up front, a tuner output, a full balanced output with switchable mic or line level, both a balanced TRS line level output and an unbalanced line level output for amplifier connections and a mute switch.

Demeter VT-400D

The famous Demeter sound and quality is now much more affordable, building on the concept of our VTBP-M-800D. We wanted to come up with even a smaller more competitively priced Amplifier that could deliver the Demeter sound, while keeping the compromises to a bare minimum.

Demeter VTBP-201S

After over 20 years of production the Demeter Amplification Tube Bass Preamplifier is still the only musical instrument preamplifier to incorporate truly modern tube design technology with circuit features found on only the most expensive and esoteric hi-fi tube equipment. The VTBP-201S has the warmth and dynamic range that only tubes can produce, yet has lower noise specifications than most solid state devices. When the preamplifier is driving a quality power amplifier, it delivers the punch and clarity of the best tube amplifiers plus the almost unlimited power of today’s modern power amplifiers.

Demeter VTBP-M-800D

All tube pre-amp circuitry Hand wired in the USA using High quality components, DC filament, full 280V high voltage supply. Classic passive tube tone controls Treble, Middle, Bass with frequency selector and presence with frequency selection.

Epifani Piccolo

At just 4.5 pounds, the third generation Piccolo travels light but packs a mighty punch. A redesigned Epifani 3-band EQ gives you the flexibility to get legendary sound in any style from rock to jazz, from punk to salsa.

Epifani UL-901

The new UL 901’s engineering features modern components like a light-weight, high-reliability digital power supply, an updated PureSound D.I. section, and a refined EQ that gives you total control over your sound in any playing situation.

Euphonic Audio iAMP Classic

For bass, keyboards and acoustic instruments, this new iAMP starts with the time-tested, wonderfully flexible iAMP front end and updates it with a truly formidable power section. The intuitive, flexible EQ section has been a key ingredient in the personal sound of many players over the years.

Euphonic Audio iAMP Doubler II

EA makes micro heads for bassists who like to hear their instruments without amp colorations. Bassists prize the two-channel iAMP Micro and Doubler amplifiers for their clear tone and small, lightweight form factor. To improve upon this design, we’re introducing the Doubler II.

Among EA’s biggest supporters are professional players who might find themselves playing a 5-string bass guitar on Friday night and an Upright Bass on Saturday. Or maybe both on the same gig. These bassists are called Doublers, and they finally have an amp worthy of their name. Doublers have specific demands: hi-fi accuracy, the power to drive the low ‘b’ on an electric bass or handle the power of a ‘doghouse’ played full tilt, and a series of unique features that allow for the proper amplification of an Upright Bass. Features like a two channel preamp for getting a properly mixed stage sound, with one channel optimized for piezo pickups and one for mics, and a set of filters that eliminate the feedback common to Upright basses. An DI XLR out sends both channels to the sound board.

Amazingly, the EA’s Doubler has all of this, and packs it all in a 4 pound box with over 600 watts of power on tap.

Trickfish Bullhead .5K

The Bullhead .5K features a Mike Pope designed, 4 band variable frequency, bass specific EQ section with switchable frequency selections integrated with a tour proven 500W @ 8 Ohm / 700W at 4 Ohm class-D power amplifier. Additional features include a studio quality DI, FX loop, aux in/HP out, 5 lbs.

Trickfish Bullhead 1K

The Bullhead 1K features a class-D amplifier rated at 1,000 watts peak driven by a Mike Pope designed, 4 band variable frequency, bass specific EQ section with switchable frequency selections. Additional features include a studio quality DI, series/parallel FX loop, aux in/HP out, 6.2 lbs.

Demeter BSC-310 3×10

Developed after years of experimentation with different speakers, cabinets, and configurations, Demeter finally settled on the three 10″ configuration for its definition, focus and ability to compliment our tube bass equipment. The top speaker is a phase-aligned coaxial design with a center mounted tweeter for crisp highs and presence in the midrange. The cabinet is big enough to stand on its own in larger venues and at higher volumes (handling up to 450 watts), but its size and weight make it portable enough for smaller gigs. The Bass 400 & BSC-310 recently won the Premiere Gear award from Premiere Guitar!

Demeter Flip Top Combo

The new 1 x 12 x 5 Flip top combo cabinet solves the problems found in most Flip top cabinets. These cabinets are built rock solid with latches that really work. The Bass speaker is housed in its own perfectly tuned area that protects the speaker from anything you may drop inside. There is also space inside the flip top compartment to store cables and pedals during travel.

Epifani DIST2 1×12

Bring a massive sound wherever you go. The compact 1×12 packs a punch without the extra weight. The dual voice-coil Neodymium driver can handle up to 350 watts of clear, fast power. Yet the whole cabinet weighs just 34 pounds.

Epifani DIST2 2×10

Rated at over 500 watts, DIST2 2×10 fills the stage with a long throw and wide dispersement. A pair of custom neo drivers move like lightning, producing a highly accurate sound all your own.

Euphonic Audio NL-112

For our 35th anniversary, the sound scientists at EA decided to re-engineer our 12-inch cabinet by revisiting our audiophile roots. The groundbreaking hi-fi speaker cabinets that defined Euphonic Audio in the 1980s reproduced the recorded field of sound with accurate dimensionality and presence. Using state-of-the-art computer analysis, we tuned our cabinets to make the most of custom drivers, high fidelity tweeters, and a sophisticated crossover design. Our speakers reproduced the loudest and the softest musical passages realistically, creating a wide, deep, focused sound field that you feel like you were onstage with the musicians at Carnegie Hall or the Blue Note Cafe.

In the 1990s, we turned our attention to bass amplification. To replicate the full range of the bass guitar in a small and light speaker cabinet, our goals were: wide dynamic range, to reproduce the loudest and softest, highest and lowest notes realistically at lowest and highest listening levels; extended bass response to reproduce the fundamental frequencies of the B and E strings; and wide dispersion, to provide a broad sound stage so that listeners around the room will hear all reproduced frequencies. Using custom drivers paired with finely-tuned crossovers in transmission line cabinets, we achieved a rich studio-quality tone with our VL series that inspired musicians such as Lee Sklar and Michael Rhodes. Drawing on feedback from studio and touring musicians, we developed the CxL and Wizzy – speakers that remain favorites to this day.

To improve upon the groundbreaking Wizzy-112 and the Wizzy MLine-112 cabinets, we envisioned a lighter, louder cabinet with improved tonal range and wide dispersion to fill a stage with the pure sound of your bass. The brand-new NL-112 utilizes a custom, lightweight neodymium driver. To improve upon the Wizzy design, we paired a larger (3-inch) voice coil with an array of sweet-sounding 1” Ferrofluid-cooled silk dome tweeters – the kind typically found in audiophile quality stereo cabinets. By removing the recessed handles we increased the cabinet’s internal volume and gave the transmission line more room to breathe, extending the bass response to 43Hz. To balance the improved bass response and sweet top end from the dome tweeters, we reworked our crossover to provide an even response all the way through the 43Hz to 18kHz range. This is a return to EA’s Hi-Fi roots and our original idea to make lightweight, small cabinets with a wide sound field that sounds like your upright or electric bass but louder.

To celebrate this shift back to our roots, we’ve changed the aesthetics to a more traditional look: brown tolex covering Italian Poplar with gold/brown grill cloth and a thick, padded leather handle. We even redesigned the EA badge to fit on a brushed aluminum plate. Paired with our new Doubler II, the new NL-112 is the sound of your bass in high definition.

Euphonic Audio Wizzy-110

The Wizzy series are the best selling bass cabinets we’ve ever produced. That’s because they deliver a balance of warmth and accuracy that fits electric bassists as well as upright players. The baby of the line is the remarkable Wizzy-110, one of the smallest and lightest bass cabinets in the history of bassdom.

The Wizzy-110 is based on our legendary Wizzy-112, known for delivering “fliptop sound for the new millenium”. The Wizzy 10 extends that tradition for smaller room gigs, acoustic and double bass settings and studio use. With its custom 10″ driver and whizzer cone paired with our proprietary transmission line cabinet design, the Wizzy-110 reproduces the low ‘B’ on a bass guitar while revealing the nuances behind every inflection in your playing – whether you’re driving a bop quintet, or anchoring a folk duo.

And at 17.8 pounds, this “10” will make you think twice before lugging anything else. To celebrate our 35th anniversary, we’ve updated the aesthetics of the Wizzy-10 with a luxurious brown tolex covering Italian Poplar with gold/brown grill cloth and a padded leather strap handle. We even redesigned the EA badge to fit on a brushed aluminum plate. Paired with our new, more powerful, Doubler II, the new Wizzy-110 is a tiny powerhouse.

Euphonic Audio Wizzy-112

The idea is simple: the less intrusions that get between your instrument and your ears, the more likely you’ll hear the sound you create. And that’s the principle that started the EA Wizzy revolution.

We started with a super-woofer that uses a ‘wizzy’ high-frequency cone inserted at its center. This eliminates the need for a separate tweeter, crossover and extra wiring – all items that separate you from your sound. What’s left is a speaker cabinet in its simplest form. Built in Italian Poplar tuned with our transmission line cabinet design, the result is pure bliss – a balance of warmth and accuracy that fits bassists of all shapes and sizes. The Wizzy 12 delivers “fliptop sound for the new millenium.” And it might be the best all purpose compact bass speaker cabinet ever made. It easily reproduces the low ‘B’ on a bass guitar, punches out rock and soul, and reveals all the emotion in your playing.

Whether driving an R&B quartet, or a bluegrass quintet, the “12” will be the one you’ll take everywhere.

Euphonic Audio Wizzy-112 M-Line

M-Line cabinets are a Euphonic Audio exclusive. They are an application of transmission line technology that can only be found in high-end audio speakers and studio monitors.

When applied to a bass speaker like the Wizzy 12, it adds a high-fidelity spin for those looking for the flattest response in a 1×12 cabinet configuration. Of course, this is only possible because we started with a successful design – the Wizzy itself, the speaker cabinet that uses a super-woofer with a “wizzy” high-frequency cone at its center. This eliminates numerous parts that separate you from your sound. What’s left is a speaker cabinet in its purest form.

The Wizzy 12 M-Line is a very special cabinet. In many ways, it’s our replacement for the VL-208, considered by many to be the best cabinet ever created for Upright Bass and Bass Guitar. The 12 M is like playing through a studio monitor for bass, yet one that can play at stage volumes. No matter what the music, the 12 M lets you hear your bass as exactly as it sounds.

Trickfish TF112

A favorite among bassists looking for portability and even frequency response in a low to mid volume application, the TF112 is precise, punchy and tuned for an even response. While the cabinet can be EQ’d to sound believable in any genre, it shines when you want a natural, organic tonality. Acoustic bass, acoustic bass guitar, basses featuring expensive tone woods and vintage instruments all reveal their subtlety and nuance when played through a Trickfish head and the TF112. And if you need a little more oomph add a second cab for the added cone area and free coupling gain.

Trickfish TF208

Don’t let the TF208’s pint-sized design fool you. It’s packed full of the same strength that makes the TF408 such a powerhouse. Utilizing the same custom Eminence® ferrite bass speakers, this 2 x 8″ compact bass cabinet delivers a tight and balanced tone. The focused low end, articulate midrange, and superior high-frequency articulation are perfect for both upright and electric basses.

As with all Trickfish cabinets, the TF208 is made from void-free Baltic Birch for superior stability and covered in our proprietary, road-worthy 22 oz. “Sharkskin” vinyl. A perforated steel grill and steel corners add to the cabinet’s durability. The HF transducers and proprietary drivers are designed by Trickfish and manufactured by world leader Eminence®. Our crossover networks employ an advanced circuit design and an on-board protection lamp that preserves component integrity even under the most demanding conditions.

The TF208 is rock solid and still light enough to carry one-handed. A side-recessed steel handle makes transportation effortless. Optimized for horizontal orientation, the TF208 stacks perfectly on the TF408 for a massive mini stack. Add it to a TF112 for a perfect small to medium volume gig. Standalone or as a pair, the TF208 is designed to impress!

I am proud to use Dunlop and Pyramid strings on all D. Lakin Basses. Click the image for info on each brand.

Back around 2000, I read in bass player magazine that Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead used to use Pyramid Gold strings on his basses circa 1969-1972. I’m a big fan of the Dead and especially the bass tone of those years. I also learned that Pyramid made (and still does) Hofner strings. This means the Beatles were primarily recorded with Pyramid flats. So, tracked down a set. They were expensive compared to other brands, but I bought them anyways. I fell in love I began putting them on most of my personnel basses. I’ve told many people about them and of those who have tried them, I have never heard a negative comment. They are perfection. If flatwounds are a part of your sound, I urge you to try them. I’ll go a step further and offer a no questions asked money back guarantee. Return the strings (even though they would be cut to fit your bass) and I will return your money!
