I met Tony in 1996. I remember I had like 20 voice mails and I was going through them, I almost missed Tony saying, “Hi This is Tony Garnier, I play with Bob Dylan…” I was so excited! A few weeks later Bob came to town playing a smaller club called “the Metro”. Tony got a 5-string from me and we were off to a long and fruitful relationship. Tony was always up for trying new basses.
In 1997 Tony called me and told he had just played for the Pope with over 500,000 fan’s (of the pope…) in Vatican City. He told me that after the sound check, Bob asked the sound man how the band sounded. The sound man told him the bass sound was incredible. Tony just pointed to his new 55-94 and smiled. So as far as I’m concerned Bob knows who we are!
Tony has been with Bob over 30 years. I’ve seen him over 30 times and hope to see and hear more.
Tony is an accomplished upright player as well. He’s a jazzbo! He also had a decent career before Bob. That’s Tony on the huge Buster Poindexter tune, Hot Hot Hot!
